Randomized clinical trials of dihydroartemisinin - piperaquine against multidrug resistant

Tran Tinh Hien

Ho Chi Minh city Medical Association.2003;8(2):67-71.

A clinical randomized trial on dihydroartemisinin piperaquin was conducted with drug resistant malaria patients. The effectiveness to cure the disease through 56 days follow up the recurrent by PCR manifested on 97.4% in DTP group and 100% in A3M group. In second study the rate of recovery was equal in all groups - DTP group 97.4%; DP group 98.7%; A3M group 98.7%. Dihydroartemisenin piperaquin was well tolerated. In less than 3% of patients, there was side effects which can be related to smoking. The preparation is inexpensive, effective, safe with high efficacy to drug resistant malaria parasite.

A follow-up results after 25 months of 2 leg open fracture treatment with external fixators

Le -- Phuc

Ho Chi Minh city Medical Association.2004;4(1):3-6.

Retrospectively, results of 64 leg open fractures (in 63 patients) treated by locally-made external fixators from April 1985 to April 1995 were examined. The distribution of these fractures according to Gustilo-Anderson classification was as follows: 15 fractures of degree II, 32 of IIIA, 11 of IIIB and 6 of IIIC. Mean age of patients age at the time of operation was 31 (range 18-63). Motobike traffic accident accounted for 85% of fractures. Skin graft, flaf surgery and operation were used. The follow-up mean time (of 64 legs) was 25 months (range 2-80 months). The mean duration of wearing external fixators was 22 weeks. 50 patients needed casting for average 6 weeks. In the Vietnamese setting, with approriate indications, well-performed debridement of wound, and closed postoperative follow-up, locally-made external fixators can be used and these may satisfactorily respond to the requirements of treatment for leg open fractures

The pathological stage was pT1 in 2 patients (no positive node), pT2 in 50 patients (17 positive node), pT3 in 15 patients (12 positive node) and pT4 in 1 patient (positive node). Among 68 patients underwent radical cystectomy, 35 patients had cultaneous ureterostomy, 26 patients had a Carmey II plasty with ileal-conduct uriary diversion, 5 patients with urinary diversion of Kock plasty and 2 patients had a Bricker operation

Laboratory surveillance of dengue haemorrhagic fever in Southern Vietnam in 2002

Vu Thi Que Huong

Ho Chi Minh city Medical Association.2004;4(1):10-12.

In 2002, DHF viro-serological surveillance was started in 19 Southern provinces of Vietnam. 247 DEN virus strains (consist of 27 DEN-1, 99 DEN-2, 9 DEN-3 and 112 DEN-4) were isolated from 3318 blood samples. The predominant serotypes were DEN-4 (45.3%) and DEN-2 (40.1%). DEN-2 virus was more positively correlated with severe cases in comparison with other serotypes. However, high rates of virus isolation were obtained from DHF grade I-II patients (49%), and then from DF, viral infection and fever of unknown origin cases (40.1%). These should be main target subjects for the active surveillance of DHF. In addition, MAC-ELISA was done on 7498 DHF serum samples taken in Southern Vietnam with the average positive rate of 44.37%

Some new attitutes in diagnosis and treatment of bladder cancer

Le Sy Hung

Ho Chi Minh city Medical Association.2004;4(1):33-35.

Bladder cancer is a significant public health problem. Significant progress has been made in understanding the underlying molecular and genetic events in bladder cancer. However, there remains a great need for the development of reliable markers that can provide clinically useful information regarding diagnosis and prognosis and to facillitate the selection of appropriate therapy in individual patients. Ongoing and future investigation is anticipated to refine treatment of patients with bladder cancer

None of the 10 patients had pre-existing medical conditions. Nine patients had a clear history of direct contact with poultry. All patients had fever, respiratory symptoms and clinically significant lymphopenia. The medium platelet count was 75.500/mm3. Seven patients had diarrhea.
