The calcium-binding protein Mtsl/S100A4 in normal, degenerating and demyelinated spinal cord of the adult mouse

Zhengyu FANG ; Liang XIONG ; Xiaolin HUANG ; Ning ZHOU ; Elena KOZLOVAALDSKOGIUS

Chinese Journal of Rehabilitation Medicine.2008;23(8):678-682,插页1.

Objective:To investigate the expression pattern of Mtsl/S100A4 in mouse spinal cord;to investigate the effects of Mtsl/S100A4 on glial cell responses.Method:The study was carried out on Mtsl/S100A4 wild type and knock-out mice. The degenerative spinal cord model was established by dorsal root or sciatic nerve injury. The de-myelinated spinal cord model was established by ethidium bromide injections. Then the expressions of S100A4,GFA P,NG2 and Mael were measured.Result:The expressions of Mtsl/S100A4 in mice spinal cord were similar to that in rats.In WT mice this protein expressed in a thin layer of fiber bundles in the tract of Lissauer, and in white matter astrocytes. There was intracellular up-regulation of Mtsl/S100A4 in white matter astrocytes of WT mice after dorsal root or sciatic nerve injury, with no difference in glial cell response between WT and KO mice.However,7 days after ethidium bromide injection,in WT mice, the astroglial reaction was restricted on operated side, where a distinct glial scar had formed. While in KO mice,no distinct glial scar formed in demyelinated area.Conclusion:Mtsl/S100A4 expression in mouse spinal cord is similar to the pattern as in rats;intracellular Mtsl/ S100A4 up-regulation does not affect glial responses in degenerative spinal cord;the presence of extracellular Mtsl/ S100A4,which entered the spinal cord after ethidium bromide induced demyelination, markedly affects the glial cell responses in demyelinative spinal cord, including glial scar formation.

Microsurgery and rehabilitation technique in the treatment of avascular necrosis of the femoral head

Mouwang ZHOU

Chinese Journal of Rehabilitation Medicine.2001;16(2):95-97.

Objective :To investigate a new method and its clinical results in the treatment of avascular necrosis of the femoral head in young adults. Method:The necrotic bone was removed and iliac periosteum and bone with vascular pedicle was transplanted in 25 cases (28 hips) ,age 12-42 years old in this group. Rehabilitation technique were applied after surgery. The time of follow up was 3-9.5 years. To evaluate the results, we used the standard score recommended by Society of Osteonecrosis in Chinese Medical Association. Result:16 cases were excellent,7 cases good, and 2 cases fair. The rate of excellent and good was 92%. Conclusion:Transplantation of iliac periosteum and bone with vascular pedicle has the effect on revascularization and new bone formation, which following with rehabilitation methods may promote the reconstruction of the necrotic femoral head and prevent it to collapse. Thus the pathogenesis process had been stopped.

An experimental study of the myogenic components of knee joint contracture

Guoxin NI ; Li SU ; Junkai TANG

Chinese Journal of Rehabilitation Medicine.2001;16(2):80-81.

Objective:To differentitate the myogenic from arthrogenic component of knee contracture resulting from being immobilized in extension for 4 weeks. Method:Ten rabbits were used as experimental animals. The right hindlimbs were immobilized with knee in extension for 4 weeks, while the left severed as controls. The range of motion ( ROM ) of both knees were measured before and after myotomy. Result:In immobilized and control hindlimbs, the mean ROM of the knee were 79.5°and 138.5°, respectively. The gain of ROM after myotomy in immobilized and control hindlimbs were 8.7° ±0. 45°, 11.6° +0.58°, respectively. Only 14.75% of the limitation of motion in ROM were accounted for by the myotomy component. Conclusion:After immobilizing for 4 weeks, the ROM of knee was significantly limited. However, the myogenic part was small and not different from normals.

Effectsof early rehabilitation on motor function of upper and lower extremities and activities of daily, living in patients with hemiplegia after stroke

Cong GAO ; Shuxiang PU ; Deyi ZHU

Chinese Journal of Rehabilitation Medicine.2001;16(1):27-29.

Objective: To study the effect of early rehabilitation on motor function of upper and lower extremities and activities of daily living(ADL) in patients with hemiplegia after stroke; and to observe whether motor function recovery of upper and lower extremities is different. Method: 96 patients were randomly divided into two groups, rehabilitation group (48 cases) and control group(48 cases). Prospective method was used in this study. Patients in the rehabilitation group were given clinical treatment and regular rehabilitation training, while those in control group were given clinical treatment and unguided self- training. The evaluation was done in pre- treatment and post- treatment(6- 8 weeks) respectively.Motor function was assessed in Fugl-Meyer assessment(FMA), ADL assessed in Barthel Index. Result: The motor scores (measured by FMA) and ADL scores (measured by Barthel index) in the two groups were improved after 6-8 weeks treatment, but there was a significant difference between the two groups, the scores in the rehabilitation group were obviously superior to those in the control group (P < 0.01 ). The mean of the Fugl-Meyer Scale (transferred to percentage of maximal motor scores) of the lower extremities was higher than that of the upper extremities pre-and post-treatment (P<0.01). However, the improvement degree of FMA scores between upper and lower extremity had no statistical difference (P>0.05). Conclusion:Early rehabilitation training of the patients with stroke hemiplegia may obviously improve motor function of the limbs and raise ADL scores. However, the degree of improvement in upper and lower extremity is similar in the first two months after early training.
