Effect of Cinnamon Intervention on Oxidative Stress and Nerve Factor Expression in Rats with Chronic Cerebral Ischemia

Wenfeng ZHANG

Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine.1993;0(07):-.

Objective To investigate the brain protection effect of cinnamon water extract on chronic cerebral ischemia rats. Methods We selected male Wistar rats to make chronic cerebral ischemia model by bilateral carotid artery ligation permanently, and the models were randomized into a model group, cinnamon high or low dose group, with 20 in each group. A control group with 20 rats was treated with sham operation. The cinnamon high and low dose groups were given cinnamon water extract 4.2g/kg and 2.1g/kg respectively by gavage in succession for 4 weeks. Y-maze test was used to test the cognitive ability of the rats. The superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity, malondialdehyde (MDA) content, and the expressions of nerve growth factor (NGF) and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) were determined. Results Compared with the sham-operated group, the cognitive ability of the model group declined, the SOD activity of brain tissues decreased, and the MDA content increased. Cinnamon improved the SOD activity, reduced the MDA content, increased the NGF and BDNF expressions, and the effect of high-dose group was better than that of the low-dose group. Conclusion Cinnamon plays its role in cerebral protection through increasing the SOD activity and expression of NGF and BDNF and reducing content of MDA.

Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine.1993;0(07):-.

Objective To explore the constitutional characteristics and risk in tinnitus patients. Methods The inclusion criteria were established on the basis of requests of constitution research. Those patients from the tinnitus clinic of Yueyang Hospital of Shanghai University of Chinese Medicine with the tinnitus as the chief complaint were included in accordance with the "Scale of TCM Constitution" to analyze the constituent ratio of various constitution types. Results There were 147 cases of gentleness type (29.64%),349 cases of biased constitution (70.36%),including 77 cases of yang-deficiency type (15.52%),37 cases of qi-deficiency type (7.46%),12 cases of yin-deficiency type (2.42%),11 cases of phlegm-damp type (2.22%),4 cases of special diathesis type (0.81%),156 cases of other type based on qi-deficiency type (31.45%),and 52 cases of other type based on yang-deficiency type (10.48%). The incidence of tinnitus was positively correlated with the patients' age. The patients mainly distributed in over 55 years of age. Gentleness type,qi-deficiency type,yang-deficiency type, other type based on qi-deficiency type, and other type based on yang-deficiency type were mainly distributed in course of disease in 0~3 months and 1~5 years. In the distribution of chronic-acute onset, all cases were chronic. Conclusion Qi-deficiency constitution and yang-deficiency constitution are the main constitutional types and risk factors for tinnitus. It is significant to improve qi-deficiency constitution and yang-deficiency constitution for treating and preventing tinnitus.

Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine.1993;0(07):-.

Objective To investigate the characteristics of TCM syndromes of Tourette syndrome (TS) to find out the basis for its TCM treatment. Methods Based on the preliminary studies, the TCM syndrome scale of TS is designed to investigate the general data, main symptoms and syndromes of 126 cases of TS children to find out the frequency of each syndrome. Results Of the 126 TS cases,97 were males, accounting for 77%; the average age was 8.31 years; and 32 had a positive family history, accountting for 25.4%. In the tic behavior, the facial twitching and limb twitching occupied 91.6% of the muscular stereotyped tic. In the vocal behavior, the throat and nasal sound occupied 42.1%. In the accompanied symptoms, the inattention occupied 69.8%. In the personality offset, the willfulness occupied 49.2%,irritable hyperactivity occupied 78.6%,and silence occupied 7.1%. More than 50% of the patients had red or dark red tongue with thick or sticky coating. Nearly 70% of them had string-taut or rolling pulse. As for the syndromes,heart-liver deficiency with deficiency wind stirred up,and liver-kidney yin deficiency with yang hyperactivity stirring up wind were common, being 41.3% and 34.1% respectively. Conclusion TS takes the heart-liver deficiency with deficiency wind stirred up and liver-kidney yin deficiency with yang hyperactivity stirring up wind as the common syndromes. The basic treating principle is enriching yin and reducing yang, and smoothing the liver to stop wind. At the same time, reinforcing the spleen and nourishing the heart, and dissolving phlegm and enlightening the brain should be applied for treatment.

Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine.1993;0(07):-.

Objective To investigate the effect and mechanism of Shouwu Yizhi Capsule (Capsule of Radix Polygoni Multiflori and Semen Coicis for dementia) on the Notch/Delta signal pathway in experimental rats with vascular dementia (VD). Methods The models were established with the modified Pulsinelli 4 vessel occlusion method. They were randomized into Shouwu Yizhi Capsule group, piracetam group, model group, and sham operation group with 14 rats in each group. Seven days after modeling, the Shouwu Yizhi Capsule group was administered intragastrically Shouwu Yizhi Capsule solution 0.08g/ml,the piracetam group was prescribed intragastrically piracetam solution 0.02g/ml,and the model and sham operation groups were given intragastrically normal saline. Twenty days later, the mRNA expression of HES1,Mash1,and ?-APP on Notch/Delta singal pathway was determined by real-time quantitative fluorescent PCR. Results Compared with the model and piracetam groups, the mRNA expression of HES1 the in Shouwu Yizhi Capsule group was significantly increased (P0.05). Conclusion Shouwu Yizhi Capsule could effectively activate the interaction of HES1,Mash1,and ?-APP on the Notch/Delta signal pathway, being the possible mechanism in the treatment of VD.

Journal of Traditional Chinese Medicine.1993;0(07):-.

Objective To extract the specific symptoms of TCM syndromes of chronic fatigue (CF). Methods Epidemiological cluster sampling method was used in this trial. Totally 782 cases of CF patients were selected from universities, secondary schools, primary schools and hospitals of southern Fujian province. The subjects filled in "Scale of Clinical Symptoms of Chronic Fatigue" to record the clinical data of symptoms, tongue, and pulse for the diagnosis of specific TCM symptoms. The random forest (RF) method was adopted to encode the 95 symptoms extracted from the above-mentioned scale to select the main symptoms of common syndromes of CF and to measure the contribution of symptoms to the syndromes. Results Symptom groups of 4 syndromes of CF were achieved. Spleen deficiency syndrome:abdominal distention after eating or in afternoon, loss of appetite, sallow completion, loose stools, and emaciation; Heart deficiency syndrome:palpitation, chest fullness, thready pulse, insomnia or dream-disturbed sleep, and forgetfulness; Liver stagnation syndrome:hot temper or depression, sighing, bitter taste, dry throat, and string-taut pulse; Qi deficiency syndrome:swollen tongue with toothprints, shortness of breath, abrupt breathing, inactive talking, and spontaneous sweating. When the symptoms were inputted to the models, the model prediction accuracy was 96.13%,94.75%,95.89%,and 94.26% respectively. Conclusion The RF method has a good classification function on the syndromes of CF. Spleen deficiency syndrome, heart deficiency syndrome, liver stagnation syndrome, and qi deficiency syndrome are commonly appeared syndromes, each of them is provided with its own specific symptoms.
