Pay attention to ocular surface defects caused by topical antiglaucomatous medications or filtering surgery.

Xing LIU

Ophthalmology in China.1993;0(01):-.

The adverse effects on the ocular surface caused by long-term antiglaucomatous medications or filtering surgery have been documented by many researchers. However,in our clinical work emphasis on this issue is far from enough. Both antiglaucomatous drugs and filtering surgery can cause tear film dysfunction and conjunctival or corneal epithelium damage, which is the main cause of glaucomatous patients'ocular uncomfortable complaints.Early diagnosis and prompt management of the ocular surface dysfunction is of great importance for us to improve patients' local tolerance and decrease their ocular uncomfortable symptoms.

Ophthalmology in China.1993;0(01):-.

Objective To investigate the proliferative inhibition of lens epithelial cell (LEC) by arsenic trioxide (ATO) and rhizoma curcumae (RC), in order to provide scientific basis for pursuing safe and effective natural drugs to prevent and cure after cataract. Design Experimental study. Participants Cultured Bovine LEC in vitro. Methods Changes of cellular form were observed with microscope. Different concentration of ATO (2.5, 5, 10?mol/L) and RC(5, 10, 20mg/ml) were added to the proliferative LEC separately. The effects of proliferative inhibition by ATO and RC on the LEC were measured with methyl thia-zolyl tetrazolium (MTT) assay method after 72 hours incubation. Main Outcome Measures Cellular form, Absorbance. Results Under the microscope, good growth and quantity increase were found in proliferative control group. Slowing proliferation, poor growth, and few disintegration were observed in ATO group and RC group. MTT assay: Different concentration of ATO (2.5, 5, 10?mol/L)and RC(5, 10, 20mg/ml) can significantly inhibit the proliferation of LEC and these effects were dose dependent(P

Jibo ZHOU ; Huaijin GUAN ; Haiyan GU

Ophthalmology in China.1993;0(01):-.

Objective To investigate the cataract patients' awareness on the cataract diseases, treatment and major obstacles for patients to seek eye care. Design Prospective cross-sectional study. Participants All 251 patients in Jiangyan county were screened by the group of eye diseases selection in 6 months for cataract treatment performed by prevention blind surgery group. Methods Patients accepted surveys before operation. The patient's awareness questionnaire was developed in Aravind Eye Hospital, India. Main outcome measures Awareness of eye disease, awareness of treatment, obstacles of therapy and false treatment. Results 89.6% of patients were aware of the occurrence of eye disease for more than 1 year. However, it was only 0.12% of patients when they realized that their eye diseases could be treated more than 1 year, the time less than 6 months was 31.9%,and the time less than 1 month was 65.7%. The major obstacles for seeking eye care were still able to see a little, economic reason, no demand for operation, short of belief for the operation, etc. Conclusions It's high necessary and imperative to educate patient the knowledge of eye health and care. Developing economy is the radical measure in a long run to improve the cataract surgical rate (CSR) in our country. Low price service and high quality surgery is the key of improving CSR at present.

Effect of visual function on posterior capsule opacification before and after Nd:YAG laser posterior capsulotomy

Xiaoping GUO ; Qun XIA ; Zheng WANG

Ophthalmology in China.1993;0(01):-.

Objective To explore the influence of stereoscopic vision on the development of posterior capsule opacification (PCO) after intraocular lens implantation. The efficacy of Nd: YAG laser was studied. Design Case-controlled study. Participants 57 consecutive patients with POC(59 eyes with phacoemulsification and IOL implantation). Methods A prospective observational study was conducted comprising 57 patients (59 eyes) who had postoperative PCO. Neodymium: YAG (Nd: YAG) laser posterior capsulatomy was performed on all patients following a standardizes procedure. Preoperative and postoperative evaluation included LogMAR visual acuity, best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), contrast sensitivity and stereoscopic vision. Main Outcome Measures LogMAR visual acuity, BCVA, contrast sensitivity and stereoscopic vision. Results The average LogMAR eyesight median of sick eye before laser treatment was (0.22?0.31) and the contrast sensitive degree of each frequency area was relatively lower than the opposite eye; After the treatment, there was evident improvement of the sick eye, and the LogMAR eyesight median of that was 0.00; The ratio of reaching the central spatial eyesight and the average sharpness degree both improve much than ahead of treatment. Those whose spatial eyesight sharpness don't get normal after the low best remedy eyesight. Irregular dipodic and previous eye disease. Conclusions LogMAR visual acuity, BCVA, contrast sensitivity and stereoscopic vision were damaged markedly with PCO. Our results indicate that Nd: YAG capsulotomy may affect the reconstruction of stereoscopic vision. Nd:YAG laser posterior capsulotomy is a valuable and clinically relevant method for clinical treatment of PCO.

Ophthalmology in China.1993;0(01):-.

0.05). Postoperative cataract incidence was higher in the patients without IOL implantation than that in the patients with IOL implantation. Postoperative cataract appeared 6 months after operation in the patients without IOL implantation, while it appeared 14 months after operation in the patients with IOL implantation. There was no significant difference in the postoperative complications between group A and group B. Conclusions Combined surgery is effective and safe for the selected patients of primary retinal detachment accompanied with cataract.

Perfect visual function evaluation pre-and-post-cataract surgery——for refractive cataract surgery

Hongsheng BI ; Xiaohua MA

Ophthalmology in China.1993;0(01):-.

Cataract surgery is not only a surgery for vision resuming, but also a kind of refractive surgery. Besides improving the design of intraocular lens, perfecting the technique of surgery and examining far and near visual acuity, we should stress the objective evaluation including contrast sensitivity, glare sensitivity, accommodate ability, binocular function and wavefront aberation for better visual results.

Pseuo-myopia:is it common and treatable?

Danning HU

Ophthalmology in China.1993;0(01):-.

Based on the survey of refraction before and after the installation of cycloplegic in thousands of school myopes in China, it appears that accommodation factor presents in 60% of cases (myopia decreased 0.5 D or more), and 10% cases belong to the pseudo-myopia (myopia disappears after the installation of cycloplegic and appears as emmetropia or hyper-opia). Long-term atropine treatment of school myopia can eliminate accommodation tonus, prevent or retard the progress of myopia. The efficiency of various treatments for pseudo-myopia should be evaluated carefully by long-term double-masked randomized clinical trials according to the principle of evidence-based medicine.

Establish basic medical unit for prevention of blindness, develop sight restoring for cataract in countryside for a long time

Zhende LIN

Ophthalmology in China.1993;0(01):-.

Sight restoring for cataract patients in countryside has been made great progress by years of effort, including floating medical team of ophthalmology, and "Vision First-China in Action" activity. Establishment of stable rural basic medical unit for prevention of blindness is recommended as an effective way in the long run because it is able to put the prevention of blindness in the list of the priorities by the local government, facilitate cataract patients to be treated at the local committee, offer local doctors great opportunities for training, and finally establish the rural network for prevention of blindness.

Multifocal visual evoked potential in the detection of glaucomatous field defects

Chuanbin SUN ; Xiaoming CHEN

Ophthalmology in China.1994;0(02):-.

Objective To evaluate the effect of multifocal visual evoked potential(mfVEP)on the detection of glaucomatous field defects. Design Case-controlled study. Participants 20 healthy individuals and 20 patients with primary glaucoma accepted mfVEP test. Methods 20 healthy individuals and 20 patients with primary glaucoma were tested with RETIscan multifocal VEP System 3.20 and OCTOPUS 101 automated perimetry G2 test program. Amplitudes were measured and interocular response asymmetry coefficient (RAC) was calculated for each site from all participants. The abnormal areas from mfVEP test were compared with field defects from automated perimetry. Main Outcome Measures Amplitude, RAC. Results 90% of suffered eyes showed at least 3 adjacent points had an amplitude decrease or RAC outside 2 standard deviations (SD) from healthy individual database, in which 63% showed at least 3 adjacent points had an amplitude decrease outside 2 SD from normal database while 70% showed at least 3 adjacent points had a RAC outside 2 SD from normal database. 2 patients (2 eyes) had field defects in mfVEP though automated perimetry showed normal field. None of the healthy showd field defects in mfVEP test. Conclusions mfVEP could be used to detect field defects of glaucoma.

Compare of daily cost of ophthalmic solutions for glaucoma

Ying GAO ; Lingling WU ; Aijun LI

Ophthalmology in China.1994;0(02):-.

Objective To determine and compare the daily cost of various ophthalmic solutions for glaucoma in China. Design Investigative study. Participants The majority ophthalmic solutions for glaucoma available in our country were included in the research. Methods Five bottles of each solution were tested separately by five researchers. After the number of drops and the actual volume for each bottle were calculated, the mean number of drops per bottle and the mean volume per bottle were determined. The volume per drop was calculated by dividing the mean volume per bottle by the mean number of drops per bottle, and the cost per drop was calculated by dividing the market price by the mean number of drops in a bottle. The number of days for both eyes usage per bottle was calculated by dividing the mean number of drops in a bottle by the number of drops required daily for both eyes. The cost per day was calculated by multiplying the cost per drop by the number of drops required daily for both eyes. Main Outcome Measures The number of days for both eyes usage per bottle and the daily cost: for both eyes usage per bottle. Results 1. The volume per drop ranged from 0.027 ml(Lumigan) to 0.053 ml(Chengrui and 0.5%Zhenrui). 2. The cost per bottle ranged from 5.7Yuan(Malaisuan Saimaluo'er) to 338Yuan (Xalatan). 3. The number of days for both eyes usage per bottle ranged from 52d (Lumigan) to 12d ( Zhenrui). 4. The daily cost for both eyes usage from expensive to cheap were Xalatan 7.51Yuan, Travatan 6.30 Yuan, Lumigan 3.84 Yuan, Alphagan 3.36 Yuan, Dilijian 2.97 Yuan, Pailiming 2.83 Yuan, 2%Zhenrui 2.34 Yuan, Betagan 2.11 Yuan, Beiteshu 2.0 Yuan, 0.5% Zhenrui 1.49 Yuan, 2%Huming 1.29 Yuan, Mikelan 1.21 Yuan,1%Huming 0.85 Yuan, Chengrui 0.63 Yuan, Malaisuan Saimaluo'er 0.23 Yuan. Conclusions The daily cost of ophthalmic solution for glaucoma ranged wildly. These data may be useful in selecting ophthalmic solution for glaucoma therapy.
