Abstract

PURPOSE:Our study was designed to evaluate the effects of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and adenovirus (Ad) on the production of interleukin (IL)-6, IL-8 and RANTES by BEAS-2B cells. The role of NF-kappaB in the production of those was also studied. METHODS:We studied the concentration of IL-6, IL-8, RANTES in the culture supernatant of BEAS-2B cell infected by RSV, adenovirus type 3 (Ad3), Ad7. The activation of NF-kappaB was also investigated and the role in the production of IL-6, IL-8, RANTES compared among RSV-, Ad3-, and Ad7- infected cells by electromobility shift assay (EMSA). RESULTS:The protein production of RANTES, IL-6, and IL-8 in RSV infection was more than Ad infection. The NF-kappaB binding activities in the promotor genes of RANTES, IL-6, IL-8 appeared in RSV, Ad3, and Ad7. These activities of NF-kappaB were inhibited by each gene specific probe. CONSULSION:We suggest that such differences in the immune responses between RSV and Ad may affect the clinical patterns and prognosis after RSV and Ad infection.
