Abstract:
Background: Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) can severely affect patients' psychological health and quality of life. Due to lack of large-scale epidemiological survey in China, it is essential to understand the prevalence and disease burden of GERD all over the country. Aims: To investigate the prevalence of GERD based on symptoms in Shiyan area, and explore the influencing factors of GERD. Methods: A total of 3 352 residents over 18 years old from January 2017 to December 2017 in Shiyan area were selected randomly. Gastroesophageal reflux disease questionnaire (GerdQ) combined with proton pump inhibitor (PPI) test were used to investigate the prevalence of GERD based on symptoms, and the influencing factors of GERD were analyzed by univariate and multivariate analyses. Results: A total of 137 (4.1%) residents were found having GerdQ score≥8, and 107 (3.2%) patients were definitely diagnosed as GERD by PPI test. Univariate analysis showed that gender, age, BMI, greasy food, smoking and Helicobacter pylori (Hp) infection were related to GERD. Logistic regression analysis indicated that female (OR=2.101, 95% CI: 1.697-2.944), BMI≥24.0 kg/m2 (OR=2.920, 95% CI: 2.105-3.852), greasy food (OR=1.794, 95% CI: 1.237-2.731) and smoking (OR=2.071, 95% CI: 1.560-2.869) were the risk factors of GERD. Conclusions: The prevalence of GERD based on symptoms in Shiyan area is lower than the national average. Gender, overweight, greasy food and smoking are risk factors of GERD, it is essential to strengthen health education and promote changes of behavior and lifestyle for preventing GERD.
