- Abstract: Protein-energy wasting(PEW)is common in patients with diabetic nephropathy. PEW is closely associated with decreased life quality and results in increased rates of death in chronic kidney disease patients. In clinical settings, doctors should pay attention to the screening and diagnosis of PEW,and make judgment from the following four aspects: biochemical indexes, weight loss, a decrease in muscle mass, and low protein and/or energy intakes. Prevention and treatment of PEW involve Individualized optimal nutritional support, physical exercise, follow-up and regular surveillance.
