Abstract: Statins inhibit the activity of enzyme 3-hydroxy-3-methyl-acetyl coenzyme A reductase and further inhibit cholesterol synthesis. Statins are the most widely used cholesterol-lowering drugs in clinical practice. Studies have found that statins also play a positive role in periodontitis treatment. In this paper, we reviewed the functions of statins in bone metabolism and anti-inflammation in periodontitis. In addition, the application of statins as a local drug delivery system in the treatment of periodontitis was described.
