Abstract:
The International League Against Epilepsy (ILAE) updated the seizure classification in 2017. This update is the first official modification since the publishing of the 1981 ILAE seizure classification. The new seizure classification has a significant change in the categories of seizure types (adding unknown onset as a new category), terminology and definitions. The aims of the changes are to increase the convenience of its utility in the clinical settings as well as the emphasis on the need of the non-medical community. In general, the new seizure classification has no fundamental change compared to the 1981 seizure classification; thus, it is a steady transition. This Chinese expert interpretation is adjusted based on local language and culture to adapt itself better to the Chinese epileptologists and neurologists and thus foster the utility of this classification.
