Abstract:
Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a multifactorial neurodegenerative disease characterized by the deterioration of the macula resulting in impaired visual acuity, which could probably cause irreversible vision loss. The pathogenesis of AMD is not clear yet though it has been found related to inflammation. As an important component of innate immunity,nucleotide-binding oligomerzation domain like receptors 3 (NLRP3)inflammasome may play a role in AMD.This article reviewed the progress in the studies of the role of NLRP3 inflammasome in AMD via discussing the activation mechanism of it,which may provide a novel treatment strategy of AMD by targeting NLRP3 inflammasome.
