Abstract:
The measurement of arterial blood gases is critically important in caring for patients with advanced cardiopulmonary disease and a variety of metabolic disorders. Under stable hemodynamic conditions the acid-base values in arterial blood are close to those in venous blood, However, the significant arteriovenous differences in pH and PaCO 2 were found in patients with circulatory compromise. The appropriate monitoring of acid-base composition and oxygenation in patients with circulatory failure requires venous blood sampling in addition to the sampling of arterial blood. Venous blood gases can provide an assessment of tissue acidity and oxygenation and may be taken as a better indication of the efficacy of resuscitation in patients with circulatory compromise.
