Abstract:
Objective To evaluate the safety, efficacy and economy of the embolization of intracranial large aneurysm by detachable coils combined with free fiber coated platinum coils. Methods Four large intracranial aneurysms were treated by detachable coils plus free fiber coated platinum coils. The diameters of the aneurysms rarged from 14 to 21 mm. Detachable coils were firstly used to form a supportive basket, then free coils were introduced for further intrabasket filling and lastly detachable coils were placed again to complete the dense packing and covering of the aneurysm neck. Results Total occlusion was achieved in 3 aneurysms and subtotal occlusion in 1 aneurysm with slight neck leakage. There were no bleeding or cerebral ischemic attack for all patients undergoing clinical follow up for 3 to 12 months after the procedure. Conclusions Embolization of large or giant intracranial aneurysms by detachable coils plus free fiber coated platinum coils should be a safe and effeclive method of choice.
