RED BLOOD CELL THYROXINE IN HYPO-AND HYPER-THYROIDISM, NEPHROTIC SYNDROME AND NON-THYROID ILLNESS

Abstract:
Red blood cell T4 concentrations (RBC T4) were measured in 18 normal subjects, 35 patients with hypo- or hyper-thyroidism, 9 patients with non-thyroid illness, and 13 patients with nephrotic syndrome. The normal range for RBC T4 was 1.2 ?0.1 nmol/L. RBC T4 was below the normal range in all 14 patients with hypothyroidism and above the normal range in all 21 patients with hyperthyroidism and in 9 patients with severe non-thyroid illness sigmficantly. There was a significant linear correlation between RBC T4 and FT4 in all patients and normal subjects.
