Abstract:
Twelve cases of hyperosmolar nonketotic diabetic coma were analysed, with 9 cases aged 60-82. The chief pre cipitating factor was found to be infection. Clinically they were characterized by mental confusion, severe dehydration, marked hyperglycemia and increased osmotic pressure of plasma. Since it was apt to be misdiagnosed, diagnostic criteria were suggested for reference. In treatment, sufficient amount of fluid and appropriate electrolytes especially potassium chloride were to be administered together with small doses of insulin. Moreover, the precipitating factor should be investigated by all means.
