Abstract:
There is no strong evidence that epidural anesthesia exacerbates multiple sclerosis. But It is unclear that recommendations regarding the use of epidural block for patients with multiple sclerosis. We report a case of parturient with multiple sclerosis whose vaginal delivery was successfully managed with epidural analgesia. The block regressed very slowly with full return of sensory function in 19 hours. At that time she showed symptom of fatigue and emotional stress. Her neurological status was gradually worsened. Finally, she had relapse of multiple sclerosis at 3 weeks after delivery. In this case, we believe that epidural block is not associated with the relapse of multiple sclerosis but it is unclear. Certainly, further evidence is needed to allow a fully informed discussion about pain relief during delivery for a patient with multiple sclerosis.
