- Abstract: Autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) is a type of liver parenchymal inflammation mediated by an autoimmune response targeting hepatocytes, and autoantibodies are one of the key biomarkers for the clinical diagnosis of AIH. With reference to the new guidelines for AIH released by the European Association for the Study of the Liver and the British Society of Gastroenterology in 2025, this article introduces the recommendations for AIH subtyping, anti-nuclear antibody detection methods, and applicability of simplified scoring criteria and systematically reviews the characteristics of target antigens of autoantibodies associated with AIH and their roles in the diagnosis, treatment, and disease assessment of AIH. It also points out that identifying new specific biomarkers is an urgent issue in AIH research.
