Abstract:
Focusing on the ethical dilemmas encountered in implementing the child-friendly concept within the context of limited medical assistance resources, this study constructed an integrative analytical framework combining “child-friendly medical principles and social work ethics.” Taking E Hospital in Shanghai as a case study, this paper employed qualitative methods such as participatory observation and semi-structured interviews to explore the ethical practices of medical social workers in charitable medical assistance. It was found that medical social workers engaged in ethical practices across three dimensions. In resource allocation, they achieved distributive justice through dynamic assessment and de-labeling, thereby bridging structural disparities. Regarding service delivery, they leveraged integrated services and information platforms to promote the transformation of assistance from purely economic compensation toward the “whole-person development.” In terms of child participation, they adopted a “relationship-based” progressive strategy to gradually empower children’s expression and decision-making within the local family cultural context. This study provided an empirical reference for understanding the ethical practices of child-friendly charitable medicine in the local context.
