Abstract:
While emerging biotechnologies provide novel solutions to severe problems facing humanity, their high risks, uncertainties, and cognitive barriers challenge the traditional ethical framework centered on “individual autonomy.” Through analysis, this paper points out that against the backdrop of highly complex technologies, overemphasis on individual autonomy may harm individuals or groups, give rise to untrustworthy conduct or technological consequences, and even trigger a trust crisis. Consequently, this study proposed to introduce “trustworthiness” into the ethical framework to address practical problems that traditional technological ethical frameworks cannot effectively resolve, such as risk-benefit balancing and expanding public participation. Meanwhile, the inherent rationality of trustworthiness, alongside its emerging social psychological and practical foundations, further verified the possibility of integrating it into the ethical framework for emerging biotechnologies.
