Abstract:
Retinal degeneration (RD) encompasses a group of disorders marked by progressive apoptosis of retinal cells and loss of retinal structural integrity, ultimately resulting in blindness. In recent years, the number of individuals affected by RD-related vision loss has been steadily increasing, seriously compromising both the physical and mental health of patients and imposing a considerable economic burden on society. Conventional therapies currently available are largely unable to repair or regenerate the damaged retina. This review summarizes the recent advances and challenges in stem cell therapy for retinal degenerative diseases.
