Abstract:
Guided by the theory that "essence is the foundation of the body" from Plain Questions: Discourse on the Comprehensive Diagnosis of the Golden Cabinet (《素问·金匮真言论篇》), this paper holds that zang-fu (脏腑) organs dysfunction leading to abnormal generation, transformation and distribution of essence constitutes the core pathogenesis of idiopathic short stature (ISS) in children. Clinically, the disease is differentiated and treated across three syndromes, spleen-kidney depletion, liver-lung imbalance, and phlegm-stasis obstruction. For spleen-kidney depletion syndrome, treatment should focus on fortifying the spleen and tonifying the kidney, as well as supplementing essence and generating marrow, with the self‑designed Jianpi Yishen Zhuzhang Formula (健脾益肾助长方). For liver‑lung imbalance syndrome, the treatment should focus on soothing the liver and tonifying the lung, regulating qi and transforming essence, with modified Sini Powder (四逆散) combined with Bufei Decoction (补肺汤). For phlegm‑stasis obstruction syndrome, it is suggested with the method of fortifying the spleen and nourishing the heart, resolving phlegm and removing stasis, by using modified Liujunzi Decoction (六君子汤) combined with Taohong Siwu Decoction (桃红四物汤).
