Neurogenic voiding dysfunction in spina bifida is a major problem affecting overall health and quality of life. Various approaches to restore normal voiding pattern have limited access. A newly developed technique called bladder reinnervation or artificial somatic-automatic reflex pathway provides an interesting alternative to traditional therapy. Microanastomosis of an intact lumbar ventral root to the third sacral ventral root is undertaken to bypass the pathological etiology of spina bifida. This intervention treats the cause of neurogenic voiding dysfunction and not just the end organ - the bladder. We present the initial results of the first four spina bifida patients who underwent bladder reinnervation in the Philippines and its effect on bladder capacity, detrussor pressure, bladder compliance, postvoid residual, bowel and bladder habits and prevention of urinary tract infection.
