A Case of Pure Squamous Cell Carcinoma in the Pancreas: Either Metastasis or Primary?

Abstract:
Primary squamous cell carcinoma of the pancreas is very rare, and pancreatic metastases from esophageal squamous cell carcinoma are also uncommon. We report a case of pure squamous cell carcinoma initially presenting as a pancreatic mass with a synchronous lesion in the esophagus. A 64-year-old male patient presented with acute upper abdominal pain and anorexia. Computed tomography imaging demonstrated a pancreatic mass with multiple lymph node and organ metastases. Histopathological examination of endoscopic ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration and biopsy established the diagnosis of pure squamous cell carcinoma.Subsequent needle biopsies of esophagus and supraclavicular lymph nodes also confirmed the diagnosis of squamous cell carcinoma. This case emphasizes the diagnostic value of endoscopic ultrasound-guided aspiration cytology and biopsy, which enables a rapid and minimally invasive assessment of pancreatic mass with high diagnostic accuracy.
