Functional Reconstruction Using a Facial Artery Musculomucosal Flap after Resection of Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the Floor of the Mouth: A Case Report

Abstract:
A 48-year-old male patient presented with a 1.5 cm white lesion on the left floor of the mouth, which was diagnosed as well-differentiated squamous cell carcinoma. Following tumor resection, a 3.5× 2.0 cm mucosal defect was reconstructed using a superiorly based facial artery musculomucosal (FAMM) flap elevated from the ipsilateral buccal mucosa. The flap healed successfully without complications. At long-term follow-up, the patient exhibited normal articulation and oral intake, with no functional impairment.This case demonstrates that the FAMM flap is a reliable reconstructive option for moderate intraoral defects of the floor of the mouth, with excellent functional outcomes.
