Recurrent Anterior Shoulder Dislocation in a Noncompliant Patient: A Case Report of Final Management with Resection Arthroplasty

Abstract:
Recurrent anterior shoulder dislocation is often managed successfully with soft tissue or bony stabilization procedures. However, patient compliance plays a critical role in long-term outcomes. We report the case of a 53-year-old female patient with cognitive impairment and end-stage renal disease who presented with recurrent anterior shoulder dislocations. Despite minimal glenoid bone loss, a Latarjet procedure was performed due to poor soft tissue healing potential and anticipated postoperative noncompliance. Initial outcomes were satisfactory; however, the patient developed graft failure and humeral head necrosis, ultimately requiring resection arthroplasty. This case underscores that even appropriately selected surgical interventions can fail in the absence of adequate postoperative care. Patient-specific factors, particularly compliance, may outweigh the choice of surgical technique in determining long-term success.
