Abstract:
A recent case report by Choi et al. in the Korean Journal of Blood Transfusion highlights a successful collaboration between a hospital and a blood center for the cross-regional supply of washed platelets. As the primary provider of blood components in Korea, the Korean Red Cross Blood Services (KRCBS) recognizes the importance of ensuring the safe and effective supply of specialized blood components such as washed platelets, particularly for patients with a history of severe allergic transfusion reactions. Since obtaining the first product license in 2017, the KRCBS has established a system for preparing and supplying washed platelets from seven out of 15 blood centers nationwide. The unique challenges associated with washed platelets, including a short expiration time of only four hours post-preparation, necessitate a robust and coordinated supply chain. This letter aimed to provide a comprehensive overview of the KRCBS’s current supply system for washed platelets, emphasizing the need for close pre-coordination between hospitals and blood centers. We also present data on recent supply volumes and a structured plan for managing preparation and controlled distribution. The KRCBS is committed to the continuous improvement of these procedures to ensure the timely delivery of this critical blood product to patients in need.
