Surgical approaches for the treatment of reproductive diseases in a budgerigar (Melopsittacus undulatus) and a helmeted guineafowl (Numida meleagris): case reports

- Abstract: Coelomic distension and lethargy were confirmed in a budgerigar and a helmeted guineafowl. Clinical evaluation suggested salpingitis and metritis in the budgerigar, while radiographic examination confirmed egg binding in the helmeted guineafowl. The budgerigar performed the salpingohysterectomy, keeping the anesthesia time short and being careful to hemostasize small vessels. The helmeted guineafowl was initially operated on for a left coelomic hernia due to egg binding. An additional operation was required as a cloacal prolapse occurred after laying. In this second surgery, to treat cloacal prolapse and prevent recurrence, a cloacal prolapse was repaired by anchoring the cloaca to the right pleura and performing simultaneously an asymmetric cloacoplasty on the right side.
