Abstract:
Osteoporosis is a systemic chronic disease characterized by reduced bone density and progressive deterioration of bone microstructure. It increases the risk of osteoporotic fractures, making it a major global public health concern. Obesity, a worldwide pandemic condition, is a recognized risk factor for chronic diseases such as type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Traditionally, however, obesity has been viewed as a protective factor for osteoporosis. Although obesity is a known risk factor for multiple chronic conditions, this perception has led to mixed assumptions regarding its health effects. With the emergence of recent studies that contradict earlier findings, diverse approaches to evaluating appropriate weight, including assessment of body composition and weight trajectory, appear necessary in the context of osteoporosis. Therefore, in this review, the author examined the definition of osteoporosis and explored appropriate weight considerations, including weight relative to body mass index, body composition, and weight trajectory, to support proper osteoporosis management.
