Abstract:
Obesity pharmacotherapy has substantial advanced in recent times, broadening the available treatment options. The currently available anti-obesity medications in Korea are classified as short- or long-term approved agents. The short-term approved medications are sympathetic amines, whereas the long-term approved medications have diverse mechanisms of action. The recently developed semaglutide and tirzepatide demonstrate superior efficacy, whereas other agents offer various distinct advantages. Anti-obesity medication selection should be individualized based on patient characteristics including budget, comorbidities, age, dietary patterns, and side effects. Although all anti-obesity medications reduce muscle mass to some extent, adequate protein intake and exercise are crucial regardless of the agent chosen. Patient education regarding realistic weight loss goals, gradual dose titration, and long-term treatment commitment is essential for successful outcomes. This review provides practical guidance for clinicians regarding patient-centered selection and safe prescription of anti-obesity medications.
