Refractory Neovascular Age-Related Macular Degeneration Improved with Vitrectomy for Rhegmatogenous Retinal Detachment: Case Report

Abstract:
Purpose:To report a case of improvement of neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD) that did not respond to intravitreal anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (anti-VEGF) treatment after vitrectomy for retinal detachment.Case summary: A 69-year-old man visited the hospital with a sudden onset of decreased vision in his left eye the day prior to presentation. He had been receiving treatment for nAMD for the previous seven years and had experienced repeated improvements and relapses despite intravitreal anti-VEGF injections. A fundus examination at the time of presentation showed retinal detachment due to a retinal tear at 11 o’clock, for which vitrectomy was performed. After surgery, nAMD improved and has not recurred to date.
Conclusions:This case demonstrated change of nAMD progression after vitrectomy. Further studies are needed on the effect of vitrectomy on progression of nAMD.
