An Incidentally Discovered Oval Gray-white Lesion in the Parafoveal Region of a Child: A Case of Torpedo Maculopathy: Case Report

Abstract:
Purpose:A gray-white oval lesion was incidentally discovered on the temporal side of the macula in a child. This report describes the etiology of the lesion and provides a review of the condition.Case summary: A 12-year-old female patient was referred to our clinic after an abnormal retinal finding on a routine vision examination at another hospital. The initial best-corrected visual acuity was 20/20 in both eyes, and no significant abnormalities were observed in the anterior segment during slit lamp examination. Fundus examination revealed a gray-white ovoid lesion, approximately one disc area in size, on the temporal side of the macula in the left eye. Optical coherence tomography showed abnormalities in the outer retina and neurosensory retinal detachment in the corresponding area. Fluorescein and indocyanine green angiography demonstrated hyperfluorescence due to a window defect in the lesion area, without any evidence of choroidal neovascularization or leakage. Both the electroretinogram and electrooculogram were normal. A literature review suggested that the lesion resembled torpedo maculopathy, presumed to result from a defect in the chorioretinal tissues during development.
Conclusions:A gray-white, oval-shaped, asymptomatic lesion was found on the temporal side of the macula in a child. The lesion appeared consistent with torpedo maculopathy, a condition not previously reported in the domestic literature.
