Potential and Limitations for the Development of Natural Substance-Derived New Dental Drugs

Abstract:
Natural substances have been known to have various therapeutic possibilities. Among them, herbal dentistry is regarded as a representative field of herbal-based dental pharmacology that aims to prevent and treat dental diseases. The purpose of this study is to explore the possibility as the sources of new drugs for dental treatment by reviewing the findings of previous studies as well as the history of traditional application utilizing various natural substances centered on the edible and medicinal plants on earth. Through this review, we will finally examine its limitations together with the achievements of these researches, thereby identifying the future directions to facilitate the development of new dental drugs, while relatively neglected compared to the medical field.
