Trauma-Induced Acute Temporomandibular Joint Disc Tear Leading to Malocclusion: A Case Report

Abstract: Disc tear of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is an uncommon finding that accompanies with advanced internal derangement and degenerative changes. Due to their nonspecific clinical presentation, diagnosis remains challenging and relies heavily on imaging modalities such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). This report presents two cases of TMJ disc tears that developed following acute trauma. Both patients exhibited sudden occlusal instability and joint pain. MRI revealed disc abnormalities consistent with tearing, localized to the intermediate zone. Conservative treatment including non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), physical therapy, and stabilization splint therapy led to clinical improvement in both patients, without surgical intervention. These cases illustrate that trauma-induced disc tears can be effectively managed with non-invasive treatment when identified early, and that MRI serves as a valuable diagnostic tool.
