Survey on Oral Hygiene Management by Occupational Therapists in Swallowing Rehabilitation

Abstract: Objective:This study surveyed the status of oral hygiene management in dysphagia rehabilitation therapy to determine occupational therapists’ awareness of the importance of oral hygiene management, their current practices, and the difficulties they encounter.
Methods:An online survey with 39 questions was conducted among 108 occupational therapists with experience in dysphagia rehabilitation. The data were analyzed using SPSS 21.0, and the subjective responses were visualized with a word cloud.
Results:Occupational therapists recognized oral hygiene management as necessary in dysphagia rehabilitation therapy. Nevertheless, several limitations were identified, including the lack of systematic guidelines, insufficient oral hygiene management tools, uncooperative attitudes of caregivers and patients, and inadequate education.
Conclusion:Future research should address the specific challenges and potential improvements in oral hygiene management during dysphagia rehabilitation therapy.
