Implementing a Bedside Swallowing Rehabilitation Diary for Patients Undergoing Partial Laryngectomy: A Pilot Study

Abstract:
Objective:This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a bedside swallowing rehabilitation diary applied to patients who underwent partial laryngectomy.
Methods:A retrospective comparative analysis was conducted between a control group (n=11) and the bedside swallowing rehabilitation diary group (n=19). General characteristics and clinical variables were assessed. Swallowing-related outcomes were evaluated using videofluoroscopic swallowing studies (VFSS) and Penetration-Aspiration Scale (PAS) scores.
Results:There were no statistically significant differences between the two groups in terms of age, comorbidities, cancer type, tracheostomy duration, or hospital stay. Follow-up VFSS was performed in only 9 patients (47.3%) of the intervention group. There was no significant difference in PAS scores between the groups. Additionally, no significant differences were observed in clinical outcomes, including percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy placement and discharge destination.
Conclusion:While the bedside swallowing rehabilitation diary demonstrated potential feasibility and a trend toward promoting functional improvement, it did not produce statistically significant clinical benefits. Future studies should establish a long-term, continuous intervention model that extends from admission to post-discharge and include measures to maximize the effects of swallowing rehabilitation by strengthening multidisciplinary collaboration.
