Surveillance results and pathogen composition analysis of suspected measles cases in Fujian Province from 2021 to 2022

Abstract:
ObjectiveTo explore the pathogen spectrum of rash and fever illnesses(RFIs) among suspected measles cases in Fujian Province from 2021 to 2022.MethodsA total of 618 measles/rubella virus nucleic acid negative throat swab samples were collected from suspected measles cases in Fujian Province from 2021 to 2022, and seven RFIs-associated viruses were detected by real-time fluorescence quantitative PCR, including enterovirus(EV), varicella zoster virus(VZV),Epstein-Barr virus(EBV), human parvovirus B19(HPVB19, B19 for short), herpes simplex virus type 6(HHV-6), herpes simplex virus type 7(HHV-7) and Dengue virus(DENV). Chi-square test was used to analyze the difference of positive rate distribution among different age groups.ResultsA total of 135 cases were detected positive for RFIs-associated virus nucleic acid, and the total detection rate was 21. 84%(135/618). There were 12 cases of EV and VZV respectively with a detection rate of 1. 94%(12/618), 33 cases of EB with a detection rate of 5. 34%(33/618), 36 cases of HHV-6 with a detection rate of 5. 83%(36/618), and 42 cases of HHV-7 with a detection rate of 6. 80%(42/618). No B19 and DENV were detected. There was significant difference in the positive rate distribution among all age groups(χ~2= 10. 497, P < 0. 05).VZV, EBV, HHV-6 and HHV-7 were detected in all age groups, mostly in children aged 3-15 years. EV was mainly detected in infants aged 0-3 years, but not in adults.ConclusionEV, herpesvirus and others can cause measles-like symptoms and are diagnosed as measles by clinicians. The proportion is high and needs to be differentiated.
