Abstract:
Objective To explore the difference on mental rotation ability between major depressive disorders and healthy subjects. Methods Twenty-three patients with major depressive disorders and 24 healthy subjects made the mental rotation tasks, and the latency and amplitude of P500,the error rate and the response time was measured by event-related potentials (ERP) system. Results Compared with the controls, the error rate in erect image was higher [(31 ± 10)% vs.(20 ± 4)%],and the error rate in mirror image was lower [(21 ± 7)% vs.(23 ± 6)%] in the patients, and the reaction time in erect image was longer [(701 ± 128) ms vs.(618 ± 85)ms],and the reaction time in mirror image was shorter [(632 ± 115) ms vs.(655 ± 91) ms] in the patients (P<0.05).The P500 latency in erect image and mirror image was not significantly different between the patients and the controls (P > 0.05),and the P500 amplitude in erect image was lower [(7.8 ± 3.6) μV vs.(9.6 ± 4.1) μV] and the P500 amplitude in mirror image was higher [(6.7 ± 2.7) μV vs.(5.5 ± 2.4) μV] (P< 0.05).Conclusion It suggests mental rotation ability be impaired in patients with major depressive disorder, and mental rotation ability in the erect image be impaired, but the part rotation angles in mirror image get compensation. There may be a dynamic balance mechanism between erect image and mirror image.
