Abstract:
Objective To explore the effect of wearing different shoes (conventional running shoes, flat running shoes and barefoot) on patellofemoral joint loads during running, thereby providing referenc-es for improvement. Methods Twenty runners completed running tests barefoot, wearing conventional run-ning shoes or flat running shoes at a speed of 4.0±0.2 m/s. The kinematic data of their lower limbs and the ground reaction force were synchronously collected using an infrared high-speed Motion capture system and Kistler three-dimensional force plates. Then, the patellofemoral joint loads were calculated by using inverse dynamics methods and a biomechanical model of the patellofemoral joint. Results Com-pared with conventional running shoes, the patellofemoral joint stress loading rate reduced significantly wearing flat running shoes and barefoot(P=0.021,P=0.033),as well as the stress-time integral(P<0.001,P<0.001),knee flexion angle(P=0.002,P=0.039),knee extension moment(P=0.001,P<0.001) and patellofemoral joint force(P<0.001,P<0.001). However, there were no significant differences be-tween wearing flat running shoes or barefoot in the peak patellofemoral joint stress, stress loading rate, and stress-time integral(P>0.05). Conclusions Wearing flat running shoes, which can provide additional cushioning and protection,is similar to barefoot in reducing patellofemoral joint loads. Therefore, from the perspective of preventing patellofemoral pain,it is recommended to wear flat running shoes.
