Abstract:
Objective To understand the features of the working environment onboard naval vessels and comprehend the comfort and practicability of eyes and respiratory protective devices through investigation of shipboard husbandry.Methods The study subjects were naval shipboard personnel (both the commissioned and enlisted) of a certain naval unit.Random cluster sampling method was used,with the naval vessel as an independent study unit.In our study,we used a self-designed questionnaire of " investigation on the practicability of eye and respiratory protective devices onboard naval vessels",and "Yes,No and No care" were 3 optional choices in response to the questions listed in the questionnaire.The investigators were required to use the same guiding words and the examinees were asked to finish the paper work on subjective sensation within 20 minutes,without any communication with one another.Results Such shipboard husbandry as derusting and painting posed eye injury and intoxication to the ship crew.90.89％ of the naval officers and sailors had the inclination to take proper protective measures against potential hazards,but actually only 60.27％ of them wore ocular and respiratory protective devices at work.Current ocular and respiratory devices had the following problems:inappropriate sizes of goggles,poor face seal,fogging,poor vision,soft and brittle plastic lens easy to be damaged or poor protective performance against high-speed/hard foreign objects,interference in the wearing of goggles with anti-dust or anti-poison mask on,shortness of breath with the respirator on,especially in squatting posture,Improper sealing of the anti-poison mask,etc.Conclusions The ocular and respiratory protective devices wore by naval ship crew in such husbandry work as derusting and painting are of poor performance in comfort and practicability.Development of more convenient,comfortable,practical,economic and suitable for fielding of personalized ocular and respiratory protective mask is absolute necessary.
