Clinical evaluation on the effects of hyperbaric oxygen therapy on the resistance to ulcerative colitis recurrence

Abstract:
Objective To observe the clinical effects of hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) comprehensive treatment on ulcerative colitis and resistance to recurrence and to explore possible mechanism involved in the recurrence of the disease.Methods Seventy cases of ulcerative colitis were randomly divided into 2 groups:the treatment group (n =36) and the control group (n =34).The treatment group was treated with HBO combined with sulfasalazine (SASP) for 45 days,while the control group was only treated with SASP for the same length of time.Results The therapeutic effects on the treatment group were superior to those of the control group,and the recurrence rate was lower than that of the control group,with statistical difference (P ＜ 0.05,P ＜0.01).Conclusions HBO combined with SASP produced good effects on ulcerative colitis,with low recurrence rate.The possible mechanism might be associated with the inhibition of excessive T-lymphocyte subgroup proliferation,improvement of T lymphocyte subgroup imbalance and adjustment of cell immune status,thus suppressing the recurrence of ulcerative colitis.
