Effect of hyperbaric oxygen coupled with enteral nutrition support on stroke patients

Abstract:
Objective To investigate the effect of hyperbaric oxygen (HBO)coupled with enteral nutrition (EN)on nutritional status,reduction of complications and further improvement of therapeutic effects in stroke patients.Methods With the knowledge and consent of the patients and following the signing of the letter of agreement,224 stroke patients were randomly divided into 4 groups:the control group,the nutritional support group,the HBO treatment group and the HBO + nutritional support group,each consisting of 56 patients.Twenty-one days after treatment,the nutritional status,incidence of complications and function recovery were assessed in the patients of the 4 groups.Results After 21 days of treatment,the levels of total serum protein,albumin,hemoglobin and triglyceride of the nutritional support group [(64.8 ± 6.8) g/L,(35.7 ±3.3) g/L,(126.7 ±16.5) g/L,(1.2 ±0.6) mmol/L] and the above data of the HBO + nutritional support group [(64.3±6.7) g/L,(35.5 ±3.5) g/L,(126.2 ±16.4) g/L,(1.2 ±0.7) mmol/L] were all superior to those of the control group [(62.1 ± 3.3) g/L,(31.6 ± 3.1) g/L,(111.8 ± 17.3) g/L,(1.1 ± 0.3) mmol/L] (P ＞ 0.05).Incidence of various complications was obviously lower than that of the control group (P ＞ 0.05).For NIHSS scores,the scores of the HBO group before and after treatment were respectively (11.23 ± 1.60) (14.83 ± 2.81),and the scores of the combined treatment group both before and after treatment were respectively (10.02 ± 1.98) (14.89 ± 3.11),which were significantly improved as compared with those of the control group (13.122± 1.60) (14.86±2.71) (P＞0.05).Conclusions Enteral nutrition and HBO treatment seemed to have synergistic effect,which could effectively improve the nutritional status,decrease the incidence of complications,promote recovery of neural functions and facilitate early recovery of stroke patients.
