Effects of prolonged deployment at sea on neuroendocrine and immune function of female naval afloat personnel

Abstract:
Objective To investigate the effects of prolonged deployment at sea on endocrine and immune system of female naval afloat personnel,so as to provide evidence in the development of health protective measures for those naval personnel during their prolonged deployment at sea.Methods A total of 33 female naval afloat personnel were chosen for the study.By using self-control method,the levels of cortisol (COR),thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH),free T3 (FT3),free T4 (FT4),prolactin (PRL),follicle stimulating hormone (FSH),luteinizing hormone (LH),estradiol (E2) and testosterone (T),as well as such humoral immune indices of IgA,IgG,IgM,C3 and C4 were detected before deployment,on the way back to the homeport and 3 months after arrival at the homeport.Results During prolonged deployment at sea,changes could be seen in the following indices:the level of COR was increased,while the level of FT3 was decreased;the levels of PRL were increased,while the levels of FSH,LH and E2 were decreased;the levels of IgG and C3 were also decreased,and statistical significance could be noticed,when comparisons were made between the indices before deployment and those after deployment (P ＜ 0.05,P ＜ 0.01).Conclusions During prolonged deployment at sea,females displayed signs of chronic stress,which had certain effect on endocrine and humoral immune functions of the females.For this reason,it was of great importance to improve healthcare of females during prolonged deployment at sea.
