Investigation on the sleep disorder in shipboard navy personnel during prolonged single ship deployment at sea

Abstract:
Objective To investigate and analyze the sleep disorder at different time points among commissioned and enlisted shipboard navy personnel during prolonged single ship deployment at sea.Methods The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) questionnaires were issued to 150 commissioned and enlisted navy personnel at month 1,2,3 and 4 during deployment at sea for self-evaluation of sleep quality of the shipboard navy personnel.Results One hundred and two commissioned and enlisted navy personnel completed the questionnaire survey.The PSQI scores in the first,second,third and fourth months were 4.09 ± 2.23,5.87 ± 2.09,7.26 ± 3.32 and 7.71 ± 3.87 respectively.Statistical significance could be noted in the scores,when comparisons were made between months (P ＜ 0.01).With the scores ＞ 7 as the critical point of sleep disorder,the percentages of the people with sleep disorder at 4 different time points were respectively 29.4％ in the first month,34.3％ in the second month,47.1％ in the third month and 48.0％ in the fourth month,and statistical significance could be noted,when comparisons were made between groups (P ＜ 0.01).Statistical differences could be noticed in sleep quality,sleep latency,sleep efficiency and daytime dysfiunction,when comparisons were made between the months (P ＜ 0.01).There was no obvious correlation between PSQI scores and the age,educational background,position (officers or soldiers) and years of service (P ＞ 0.05).Conclusions During this prolonged single ship deployment at sea,the rate of sleep disorder occurred among navy personnel was relatively higher.With the extension of deployment at sea,sleep latency was prolonged,sleep efficiency and sleep quality were decreased and daytime dysfunction deteriorated.
