Abstract:
Objective To analyze the features of surgical cases in the foreign medical service , and also to investigate manning requirements of the medical staff during “Mission Harmony-2013”.Methods A retrospective analysis of the admission and treatment of surgical patients during the medical tour of the hospital ship to foreign countries , then statistical analyses were made concerning surgical categories and anesthetic modes, and finally, the manning of medical personnel during the deployment was compared with the practical manning requirements in actual deployment .Results A total of 142 surgical patients were admitted and treated, including 120 foreign patients, of whom 35 received surgery under general anesthesia (accounting for 24.6%) and 11 had surgery under peridural anesthesia (accounting for 7.7%).Surgical categories were mostly orthopedics (33.1%), general surgery, including heptobiliary surgery (26.8%), ophthalmology (21.8%) and otorhinolaryngology (12.0%).Conclusions Due to such restricting factors as short berthing time, surgeries mainly concentrated on orthopedics , general surgery and ophthalmology .The medical tour undertaken by the hospital ship “Ark Peace” provided good evidence for the manning of medical personnel and preparation of surgical devices in future identical missions .
