Effects of upper limb rehabilitation robot combined with hyperbaric oxygen in the recovery of upper limb function in stroke patients with hemiplegia

Abstract:
Objective To investigate the therapeutic effects of upper limb rehabilitation robot combined with hyperbaric oxygen(HBO) in the rehabilitation of upper limb in stroke patients with hemiplegia.Methods One hundred and fifty cases of stroke patients with hemiplegia were randomly divided into 3 groups,the hyperbaric oxygen (HBO)group,the robot group and the comprehensive treatment group.The patients in the 3 groups all received basic drug and conventional rehabilitation treatment.The patients in the HBO group were treated with HBO;the patients in the robot group were additionally supplemented by upper limb rehabilitation robot training;and the patients in the comprehensive treatment group were supplemented by HBO as well as upper limb rehabilitation robot training.The treatment lasted for one month.Simple upper limb function test (STEF),Fugl-Meyer upper limb movement function scores (FMA) and modified Barthel index scores (MBI) were respectively performed both before and after treatment,and double-blind evaluation was made for the purpose of objectivity.Results There were no significant differences in the detected scores of STEF,FMA and MBI before treatment,when comparisons were made between the 3 groups(P ＞ 0.05).After one month of treatment,the scores of the above indicators in all the groups were significantly improved,as compared with those before treatment (P ＜ 0.05),with the scores of the comprehensive treatment group improved most signficantly.STEF scores for the comprehensive treatment group were 68.4 ± 6.9 after treatment,as compared with that (15.8 ± 16.2) before treatment.FMA scores after treatment were (56.4 ± 6.9),as compared with that (20.6 ± 4.2) before treatment.MBI scores after treatment were (76.7 ± 22.7),as compared with that (22.7 ± 6.5) before treatment.As seen from the above,the comprehensive treatment group achieved the most satisfactory result,then came the robot group and the last was the HBO group.Statistical significance could be noticed in the scores detected,when comparisons were made between the 3 groups (P ＜ 0.05).Conclusions The application of upper limb rehabilitation robot coupled with HBO therapy could further improve upper limb function in stroke patients with hemiplegia and could help to improve their life quality,therefore,it was worth further clinical extention and application.
