Abstract:
Objective:To gain an in-depth understanding of the emotional experiences of junior midwives involved in perinatal death delivery events and provide recommendations to promote their mental health. Methods:This qualitative study employed purposive sampling to select 10 junior midwives from the Fourth Affiliated Hospital of Harbin Medical University for semi-structured interviews between July and August 2023. Colaizzi 7-step analysis method was used to organize the data and extract themes. Results:Two themes were extracted: the experience of midwives involved in perinatal death deliveries, which included significant somatization reactions and complex, negative emotional experiences; the coping strategies adopted by the midwives, such as temporary avoidance, emotional release, cognitive restructuring, and seeking social support. Conclusions:Junior midwives are prone to experiencing physical discomfort and negative emotions in adverse delivery events. Greater attention should be given to death education for midwives, the implementation of grief counseling training, and providing comprehensive emotional support to enhance their psychological well-being.
