Abstract:
A 53-year-old female patient received IV infusion of meropenem for injection 1.0 g once every 8 hours for urinary tract infection. Her platelet count (PLT) was 151×10 9/L before using meropenem. On the 9th day of meropenem treatment, the laboratory test showed PLT 577×10 9/L and on the 12th day, the patient′s infection was controlled but PLT increased to 829×10 9/L. The thrombocytosis related to meropenem was considered. Meropenem was stopped and replaced by IV infusion of piperacillin sodium and sulbactam sodium for injection 5 g dissolved in 100 ml of 0.9% sodium chloride injection once 8 hours. Three days later, the patient′s PLT decreased to 782×10 9/L; 23 days later, PLT was 272×10 9/L.
