Bibliometric study of clinical nutrition based on topic classification, keyword co-occurrence and burst detection analysis exemplified with literature published in ESPEN and ASPEN journals in the past 10 years

Abstract:
Objective:To compare and analyze the research characteristics of European Society for Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism(ESPEN)(Clinical Nutrition) and American society for parenteral and enteral nutrition(ASPEN)(Journal of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition) journals in the past ten years and to understand the main research contents, research hotspots and development trends of clinical nutrition in Europe and America.Methods:The main research contents, published studies from China and the distribution of highly-cited papers in ESPEN and ASPEN journals in the past ten years were analyzed using topic classification. The keyword co-occurrence clustering knowledge graph in the past ten years was developed by keyword co-occurrence analysis, which objectively demonstrated the research topics and high-frequency keywords in clinical nutrition studies from Europe and the United States. The burst detection algorithm was used to identify the emerging keywords in clinical nutrition studies and to reveal the dynamic changes of clinical nutrition research hotspots in Europe and the United States.Results:The majority of studies published in ESPEN journal focused on diseases related to glucose and lipid metabolism (accounting for 34%), with the main research directions including obesity, insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome, etc. The majority of studies published in ASPEN focused on parenteral and enteral nutrition (accounting for 56%). 15% of the summation of these two journals looked at nutrition assessment and the proportion is on a rise in recent years. The main research hotspots of nutrition assessment involved the development and application of malnutrition assessment guidelines and standards. In the past three years, the research hotspots in ESPEN and ASPEN journals mainly included COVID-19, metabolomics, Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition, intestinal failure, obesity, sarcopenia and so on.Conclusions:The journals of ESPEN and ASPEN have respective emphases concerning the research direction. Diseases related to glucose and lipid metabolism, parenteral and enteral nutrition and nutrition assessment are the principal development directions of clinical nutrition in Europe and America in the future.
