Abstract:
Objective To evaluate the effectiveness of a narrative medicine teaching method based on"empathy ability"in the pediatric training of general resident physicians. Methods A study was conducted among general practice residents newly enrolled in the pediatric program from July 2023 to July 2024.Participants were divided into an experimental group(n=30)and a control group(n=30)using the random number table method. The control group received standard general practice resident training, while the experimental group received the same training plus a narrative medicine education strategy focused on"empa-thy ability".The Jefferson Scale of Physician Empathy(JSPE)and the Chinese Clinician Occupational Spirit Evaluation Scale scores were compared between the two groups before training and at weeks 1,4,and 8 post-training.Additionally,differences in the SEGUE Framework for assessing doctor-patient communication skills and the Interpersonal Process Scale(IPC)scores were compared before and after training. Results At weeks 1,4,and 8 post-training,the JSPE scores in the experimental group were significantly higher than those in the control group(P<0.05),with significant interaction effects(P<0.05).At weeks 4 and 8 post-training,the experimental group's scores on the Chinese Clinician Occupational Spirit Evaluation Scale were significantly higher than those of the control group(P<0.05),with significant interaction effects(P<0.05).After training, both groups of subjects showed an improvement in SEGUE scores compared to before training(P<0.05).However,the scores of information collection, information delivery and understanding of patients in the experimental group were all higher than those in the control group(P<0.05).After training, both groups of subjects showed an improvement in IPC scores compared to before training(P<0.05),but the experimental group scored higher in all aspects compared to the control group(P<0.05).Conclusion The narrative medicine teaching method based on"empathy ability"significantly enhances the empathy, professional spirit, and doctor-patient communication skills of general practice resident physicians.
