Abstract:
Acinetobacter baumannii is a major opportunistic pathogen and a serious global public health threat, primarily due to its extensive antibiotic resistance, which contributes to high morbidity and mortality, particularly among hospitalized patients. Treatment options for multidrug-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii infections are severely limited, and effective strategies to manage respiratory colonization or chronic infection are lacking. While the critical roles of host immunity and immunotherapy in combating this resilient pathogen are increasingly recognized, research in this area remains insufficient. This review outlines the fundamental immune mechanisms in the lung and focuses on the key virulence factors of Acinetobacter baumannii involved in pulmonary infections. It specifically examines the dynamic interactions between these virulence factors and the host immune system during the course of infection.
