Relationship of serum polyligand proteoglycan 1 and fibroblast growth factor receptor 3 levels with the stage of diabetic retinopathy

Abstract:
Objective To investigate the relationship of serum levels of poly ligand proteoglycan 1(SDC1)and fibro-blast growth factor receptor 3(FGFR3)with the stage of diabetic retinopathy(DR).Methods A total of 168 DR patients admitted to our hospital from January 2022 to December 2023 were included in this study.According to the DR staging of these patients,they were divided into a non-proliferative DR(NPDR)group(121 cases)and a proliferative DR(PDR)group(47 cases).In addition,50 diabetic patients without DR fundus-related diseases admitted to the hospital were select-ed as the NDR group,and 50 healthy volunteers who did physical examination at the hospital at the same time were select-ed as the control group.The serum levels of SDC1 and FGFR3 in all patients were compared.The value of serum SDC1 and FGFR3 levels in PDR staging of DR patients was evaluated using receiver operating characteristic(ROC)curves.The fac-tors influencing the staging of DR patients were explored using multivariate Logistic regression analysis.Results The ser-um levels of SDC1 and FGFR3 in the PDR group were higher than those in the NPDR,NDR,and control groups(all P＜0.05).The levels of serum SDC1 and FGFR3 in the NPDR group were higher than those in the NDR and control groups(all P＜0.05).The serum levels of SDC1 and FGFR3 in the NDR group were higher than those in the control group(both P＜0.05).The areas under the curve(AUC)of serum SDC1 and FGFR3 levels for assessing PDR staging in DR patients were 0.741[(95％confidence interval(CI):0.696-0.791]and 0.839(95％CI:0.794-0.889),respectively.The AUC of ser-um SDC1 combined with FGFR3 levels was 0.917(95％CI:0.872-0.965).The AUC of the combined method for the as-sessment of PDR staging in DR patients was higher than that of the two indicators alone(both P＜0.05).The proportions of hypertension and hyperlipidemia history,fasting blood glucose,HbA1c,and LDL-C levels in the PDR group were higher than those in the NPDR group(all P＜0.05).Multivariate Logistic regression analysis showed that a history of hypertension[Odds ratio(OR)=0.363,95％CI:1.357-4.115],a history of hyperlipidemia(OR=0.807,95％CI:1.427-5.519),serum SDC1≥51.14 μg·L-1(OR=0.582,95％CI:1.818-7.058),and serum FGFR3≥4.27 μg·L-1(OR=4.870,95％CI:0.606-9.100)were risk factors affecting the staging of DR patients(all P＜0.05).Conclusion The changes in serum SDC1 and FGFR3 levels are closely related to DR staging and are expected to become novel serum biomarkers for evaluating DR progression.
